An Ant Ballet, Choreographed By Pheromones
Ants aren’t known to be particularly vocal, despite their mandibular protrusions. But such tightly-knit communities such as those in an ant hill are hugely dependent on communication. How do they do it?
They communicate via pheromones. These are chemicals released by one member of a species that bring about a change in another. While whether humans use them is still a question, ants use chemical signals for everything from feeding to navigation to defending the home front. This is in contrast to bees, who shake it like the best of ‘em, dancing to communicate.
Ollie Palmer decided to use that communication to create a living science/design exhibit called Ant Ballet. A robotic arm spreads synthetic pheromone chemicals in semi-controlled patterns, and the ants are released. They are powerless to fight the criss-crossing chemical signals, much as they would be while following a trail to a food source in the wild. He tracks them as they create patterns like this:

Maybe in using their sensory systems against them, we can investigate the enormously complex communities that are created by creatures as simple as ants. Check out much more on his website.
